PIUS BOYS, ‘GATOR GIRLS “TUNE UP” FOR STATE, CAPTURE LINKS CHALLENGE TITLES

Lincoln Pius X and Lincoln North Star captured the respective Boys’ and Girls” Titles as area high schools competed at Sun Valley Lanes Sunday, January 8, in the annual Links Challenge high school bowling tournament.

The meet is a natural lead-in to the district qualifying that takes place at the end of January, leading into the NHSBF State Championships, to be hosted February 11-12 by Lincoln’s bowling centers, with the arena finals matches held Sunday at Sun Valley Lanes.  The 30 competing teams had a gauge of their overall strength, on a similar-styled oil pattern to the State event, which challenged the players in their shot-making.

The Varsity Boys qualifying were led by Lincoln Southeast with a three-game tourney-best score of 2769, earning the top seed for the 11-game Baker round.  The top two teams in each division, Girls and Boys, earned the best-of-three Finals title showdown.  24 of the 30 competing teams earned Baker seeds.

In the Baker round, the Knights continued their domination, winning their first ten matches to easily earn their Finals berth with a score of 2287 (10-1).  Lincoln Pius X, despite losing to Lincoln East in game 11, 177-159, and having fifth actual pinfall in the Bakers, earned their way in with the help of 225 bonus pins, posting 1971 (7-3-1).

In the Boys’ Final, the Knights lost their tournament edge as the ‘Bolts kept applying the pressure throughout the Final, and prevailed 2-0 (165=161, 181-169), to earn the title and top scholarship monies.

The Varsity Girls were paced by Lincoln North Star (2416) and Lincoln Pius X (2376) in Qualifying…then the ‘Bolts ramped up their efforts in the Baker games, tallying 1860 in actual pinfall (second only to the LSE Boys) to earn the Finals with 2070 (7-4).  Meanwhile, the ‘Gators separated themselves from the pack and survived a mild scare in game 11 to earn a 24-pin advantage over Lincoln East to secure the other Finals spot, with 1994 (7-4).

The opening game of the Girls’ Final went to the hot-hand Pius five, 153-149…but similar to the 2011 State Finals, the Gators found another gear and went on to capture games two and three, 180-147, 167-148, to grab the title and top prize.

The Knights’ Ryan Moats was the outstanding individual performer in qualifying with a score of 662, the only bowler to best 600, earning him honorary Captain of the All-Tournament team.  Others named:  Cameron Brei (Adams Central), Matt Brauch (East), Cory Etmund (North Star), Shane Horken (Southeast), Jacob Rimpley (North Platte) and Nick Schuller (Pius X).

The Girls’ qualifying scores were led by All-Tournament Captain, Nicolette Warnke (Kearney), with 562.  Others honored:  Haley Hall (North Star), Tanner Leapaldt (Lincoln High), Kendra Porter (North Star), Steph Beyea (Gretna), Kaylee Petersen (Pius X) and Sam Kazda (East).
