2008 NHSBF State Championship Results

Here’s the recap by Class:

Class D
Girls Recap:  McCool Junction used the “whole is greater than the sum of its parts” theory on the way to earning their fourth Class D Girls bowling title at the Nebraska High School Bowling Federation State Championships at Lincoln’s Sun Valley Lanes.

The Mustang quartet averaged just under 130 as a team in first round qualifying on Saturday afternoon. In Sunday’s Baker format final against Newman Grove, the Mustangs came together for scores of 152, 177, and 168 to capture state championship number four.

Boys Recap:  In one of the biggest comebacks of the tournament, the Howells Bobcats rebounded from an 0-2 deficit to claim their first Class D Boys title Sunday at the Nebraska High School Bowling Federation State Championships at Lincoln’s Sun Valley Lanes.

Coach Ann Brodecky’s team came out into the lights of the specially constructed arena, and needed the first game to calm their nerves. By the second game, the Bobcats were bowling better, but lost a close match to Newman Grove, 157-144.

Fortunes changed in game three as the Bobcats, which include three of Brodecky’s sons, won the first of three matches in a row. All matches were decided by less than 10 pins, with each coming down to the last frame.

Class C
Kristi Manasil had a full rich day Sunday at the Nebraska High School Bowling Federation Class C State Championships.
Kristi coached the Burwell/Ord/Arcadia boys and girls team to their first state high school bowling titles.

Girls Recap:  The girls had little trouble in Saturday’s qualifying round. Led by Liz Reynolds’ 160 average that placed her fifth in the Class C Singles competition held in conjunction with Saturday’s qualifying, the Longhorns were the number three seed going into the Baker elimination round.

After defeating Plainview and Wayne by identical 3-1 margins, the state was set for Sunday’s showdown with the Centurions.

In the best of five finals, the Longhorns see-sawed back and forth with Centura before winning the final match 134-126. The first title was in the books.

Boys Recap:  It looked like Sunday’s final against Plainview was going to be a 3-0 sweep, with the Longhorns capturing the first two matches each by seven pin margins.

Plainview came back to capture the next two games in the match to force the fifth and deciding game.
The Longhorns prevailed in game five with a 191-137 victory, much to the delight of the team’s fans in the “arena” specially constructed inside Sun Valley Lanes.

Class B
Girls Recap:  The Seward Girls bowling team added another Class B State Championship to their collection with a commanding 3-0 victory over Scottsbluff-Gering at the Nebraska High School Bowling Federation State Championships at Lincoln’s Sun Valley Lanes.

The BlueJays were the second seed after Saturday’s opening round of qualifying. They went on to defeat Plattsmouth and Alliance to earn their shot at title number two.

Led by Senior Reba Wilke and Sophomore Felicia Benes, the BlueJays defeated Scottsbluff-Gering by scores of 191-159, 169-160, and 163-138 in Sunday’s Baker format best of five finals competition.

Boys Recap:  Lexington’s tournament experience helped the Minutemen capture their second Class B Boys title at the Nebraska High School Bowling Federation State Championships at Lincoln’s Sun Valley Lanes.

When it came time to bowl as a team in the Baker format, the Minutemen showed their stuff, defeating Scottsbluff-Gering and Lincoln Pius X by identical 3-0 margins on Saturday. This set the stage for Lexington to face Aurora in the Class B final.

Playing to an enthusiastic crowd of fans, many with signs and painted faces, Lexington opened with a 194-152 victory. They never looked back after the opening win, going on to post 197-148 and 192-188 victories over the Huskies.

Class A
Girls Recap:  On Saturday, Lincoln High knocked off the defending state champions, Lincoln North Star and then bested the Columbus squad to earn their third consecutive trip to the finals.

Using an improved spare game, the Links cruise to a 3-0 victory over the number one seed, Lincoln Southeast. This was the Links third consecutive trip to the arena finals and their first state title.

Boys Recap:  Kearney’s performance in the Nebraska High School Bowling Federation State Championships at Lincoln’s Sun Valley Lanes can only be described as gutsy.

The Bearcats earned their first Class A Boys title after taking each match to its limit in front of an energized group of fans and the lights of the television cameras.

Coming out into the specially designed arena inside Sun Valley Lanes, Kearney looked like a team confident it could win a state title. They defeated the defending champs 179-157 in the opening match.

The next two matches went to Columbus.

Facing elimination was nothing new to the Bearcats during the weekend, so the boys buckled down and forced a fifth match, defeating the Discoverers 185-170.

The fifth game turned out to be the highest scoring match of the finals, with both teams giving it all they had. When the final shot was delivered in their 222-206 victory, the Bearcats were Class A state champs
